Embracing the Challenge of Size
I decided to attempt painting a large format piece. This one measures 15" x 22", which is quite large for both watercolor and myself. The reference photo was in black and white, adding complexity since all the color choices had to be imagined. There are aspects I love and others I'm not fond of, but that's all part of the process.

The Process of Creation
Creating a large piece requires a different mindset. The scale can be intimidating. However, I find it liberating. With more space, I can explore my ideas more freely. Each brushstroke feels more significant. I can express emotions and nuances that smaller pieces sometimes limit.
Imagining Colors
Working from a black and white reference photo means I must rely on my imagination. I think about the mood I want to convey. Do I want it to feel warm and inviting or cool and distant? This decision-making process is crucial. It pushes me to think deeply about color theory and how colors interact.
Learning from Mistakes
Not every decision leads to the desired outcome. There are aspects I love and others I'm not fond of. This is part of the artistic journey. Each mistake teaches me something new. I learn to embrace imperfections. They often lead to unexpected beauty in my work.
The Joy of Watercolor
Watercolor is a unique medium. It allows for fluidity and spontaneity. The way colors blend and flow is mesmerizing. I’m drawn to the way watercolor captures atmosphere, glow, and subtle transitions—qualities that allow even the simplest subject to feel alive.
Techniques I Use
In my work, I often use wet-on-wet techniques. This involves applying wet paint onto wet paper. It creates soft edges and beautiful blends. I also enjoy layering colors. By allowing each layer to dry, I can build depth and richness in my paintings.
The Next Chapter
As I move into the next chapter of my life, I’m choosing to make my “fourth quarter” about art, exploration, and growth. My goal is to build an audience, share my work more openly, and spend more time painting and traveling.
Connecting with Others
Art is about connection. I want my paintings to resonate with viewers. I aim to evoke emotions and spark conversations. Sharing my journey and my work is essential to fostering this connection.
Future Projects
Looking ahead, I have many ideas for future projects. I want to explore different themes and subjects. Traveling to new locations will inspire my work. Each place has its own unique light and atmosphere, which I hope to capture in my paintings.
Conclusion
Thank you for visiting—I’m glad you’re here. I hope my journey into large format watercolor painting inspires you. Art is a continuous journey of exploration and growth. I invite you to join me in this adventure. Together, we can appreciate the beauty of creativity and the stories it tells.
